Andie Brocklehurst — Our resident Internet Marketing Guru we talk Kindle publishing and alternative revenue sources

With Andie Brocklehurst — Internet marketer supreme, online business expert

In short

Andie Brocklehurst, a 20-year internet marketer, explains why Kindle publishing works better as a lead-generation tool than a royalty earner, how short reads and low-content books lower the barrier to publishing, and why AI site builders like Bookmark beat WordPress for beginners. Also covers spotting marketing charlatans, honest paid-for product reviews, and picking a niche you can sustain.

Why does Andie say most "push button" internet marketing products don't work?

Because there is no push-button magic, and the people selling it know that. Andie says an awful lot of charlatans and shysters sell magic make-money systems that can't work, so buyers conclude internet marketing doesn't work at all. He has done it for 20 years and says anyone of average intelligence can make a good living with study and effort.

Can a complete beginner really publish on Kindle?

Yes, and for free. Amazon's KDP programme is free to join, gives you the tools and includes loads of training videos, so you don't have to spend a penny learning. Andie published his own books simply by following the step-by-step instructions and says there is no need to buy expensive courses.

What are short reads and low-content books?

Short, often non-fiction pieces — a short read could be ten pages, or a quick how-to guide, or a short story. Andie argues everyone has a book in them but not everyone has a full-length novel; people stall because they think they must write hundreds of pages, and short reads remove that barrier.

If Kindle royalties are small, why bother publishing at all?

Because the book is a lead-generation tool. Andie's main interest is generating subscribers from people who download the books. He includes a bonus offer inside — a free video, for instance — which requires an email address, putting the reader on his list so he can follow up and build rapport.

How did Andie rebuild his website so quickly?

He used Bookmark, a paid platform that uses AI to mock up a design in front of you; you keep hitting build until you like one. Because his content already existed, he spent about half an hour tweaking the design and the rest of the time copying and pasting from the old site.

Is Bookmark easier than WordPress with plugins like Optimize Press or Oxygen?

Definitely easier, though it still has a learning curve. With WordPress you start on the back foot, learning WordPress and then the plugins and themes on top, doubling the learning. Bookmark manages everything in one platform, has good live chat support, and Andie is also relieved to escape WordPress's security problems.

Why do Andie and Kurt buy the products they review instead of taking free copies?

So they see exactly what a paying customer sees. Review copies are sometimes the advanced version without being labelled as such, leaving real buyers on a basic version and paying to upgrade. Buying it means they see the upsells during checkout, can show the members area, and can say exactly what they think.

How do you choose a topic that will actually sell?

Pick something you're passionate about, then check there's a market. Passion matters because you'll write blog and social posts, create a product and advertise, and without it you'll burn out first. Google Trends is free and shows how many people search a keyword each month — ten a month means no traffic.

What went wrong with David's motor vehicle sales course?

Nobody bought it — not one person — despite marketing and paid advertising. When he asked people at the local market, they told him they already sold motor vehicles and didn't need to be taught how. Andie adds that "feature creep" makes this worse: a product solving 20 problems is harder to sell than one solving one.

In their words

Taken from the recording, word for word.

There is an awful lot of charlatans and shysters, shall we say, in the business who will sell you a magic push button, make money system, which won't work, can't work, never going to work.

— Andie Brocklehurst

I think when they say everyone's got a book in them, I think they do. But not everyone has got a full length novel in them.

— Andie Brocklehurst

It's better to have something up, even if it's a bit ugly than it is to not have a website because a website will generate you some interest, some traffic, some customers, whatever.

— Andie Brocklehurst

If you aren't passionate about it, you are going to burn yourself out before you get all of those things done. So that's why you need the passion. But it also is critical that you know there's a market for it.

— Andie Brocklehurst

If you put up a fresh website with WordPress within 10 minutes, you're getting attacked by bots. That's how crazy it is.

— Andie Brocklehurst

Key takeaways

  1. Kindle's real value for a marketer is audience-building, not royalties — a cheap or free book becomes an entry point onto an email list.
  2. Publishing short reads and low-content books sidesteps the reason most would-be authors never finish anything.
  3. An imperfect website live now beats a perfect one that never launches, because a site with no existence generates nothing.
  4. AI-assisted builders remove the double learning curve of WordPress plus plugins, and avoid WordPress's exposure to bot attacks.
  5. Honest product reviews require buying as a customer, because free review copies hide upsells and version differences.
  6. Research the demand before building: ask potential buyers what they want rather than assuming, and check search volume with Google Trends.

Frequently asked questions

Are there free groups to join as well as the paid one?

Yes. Society11 Moneymakers is a free Facebook group offering a sampling of the main group's content, Kurt runs Free Books and Book Reviews for free Kindle titles, and Andie runs Cyber Hustles, which he says will always be free.

What is Cyber Hustles for?

People looking for a sideline. The focus is side hustles that can be scaled into a full-time thing, because Andie's complaint about most side hustles is that they can never grow beyond the time you put in.

Is Society11 membership open indefinitely?

No, it is capped at 511 members and membership was just over 300 at the time of recording. Andie says the cap keeps the tools in the members area effective, following the "oversubscribed" model from a book of that name.

Is private label rights content worth buying?

It depends entirely on the writer. Andie says there are good PLR writers and bad ones; find the good stuff and know how to use it and you can make decent money, but buy the rubbish and it won't help you at all.

How do you find Amazon's publishing programme?

Type KDP in place of www before amazon.com or amazon.co.uk and it takes you to the Kindle Direct Publishing programme. You sign in with your regular Amazon login, and joining is free.

What's involved? There is, gone 7 o'clock. My special guest on the line. Man, we haven't spoken to you for a while. It's internet marketing guru, Andy Brockolos. Hello, Andy. Hello, David. How are you? Good to speak to you again. It has been a while. It has indeed. Are you using your new piece of software that made me very jealous because I couldn't get it? It's something called Crisp. Are you using that tonight? Yes, I am. And it's coming across beautifully. Crisp is one of these programs that was available and he discovered it and it cuts out all the background noise. So he could probably be listening to some Iron Maiden right now and we wouldn't know about it. Well, no, but it certainly should. I mean, at the moment here, it's raining very hard. There's a lot of sort of noise from outside. The birds are going. And this uses AI to do it, or there's no settings or anything. You just install it and it works. It's like what software should be, I think. Well, this is one of the reasons that I love chatting to you. I love hanging out in Society 11 because you guys always go out and you find these interesting bits of tech and interesting things that you do. Let's just go back very quickly.

Society 11 is where it all started. It's something that you and Kurt got together and it's basically a society for ethical marketers? Yes, the way we put it is a group of like-minded ethical marketers where we became very aware that there is an awful lot of charlatans and shysters, shall we say, in the business who will sell you a magic push button, make money system, which won't work, can't work, never going to work. But they will tell you that it's really easy. And then and sadly, hundreds and thousands of people fall for these things all the time and they buy them and they get them and they don't deliver the results they want. And then they wander off going, well, this Internet marketing thing doesn't work. But the truth is I've been doing this Internet marketing thing for 20 years now and it absolutely does work. But it isn't as there's no push button magic. You know, you've got to put in a bit of work, you've got to put in some effort. But if you know what you're doing and you study the right things, there's no reason why anybody with average intelligence can't make a really good living online. Which means having said average intelligence, there's hope for me. But when you say this, you know, the latest little bit that I've just seen advertised on the Internet is instant biotraffic in 90 seconds.

Exactly nonsense. And you know what? A year, two years ago, I would have looked at that and gone, this is the answer to my prayers and I would have bought it and wasted my money. And this is where I believe guys like yourself, Kurt, and there's a number of other people in Society 11 and that's the great part about being part of that is you can ask these kind of questions and you guys give so much value there. There's something and I haven't had a chance to do it because I've been running around a bit like a headless chicken over the last couple of days. But is it you and Kurt that have released this Kindle book thing or is that a Kurt? Is that a Kurt project? Kurt's doing the group for free Kindle books. But it came about because we're both what we like to do is we will take a topic and we'll say, I reckon there's a lot more that can be done with this or there are angles people haven't found with this. And let's see if we can find them and test them and whatever else. And Kindle was something that I played around with Kindle publishing back in 2013. In fact, I've got books listed that are still on there from there, which still make me money every month. Not a great deal of money, you know, $10 commission of Amazon each month for the book sales or whatever royalty payment. And I thought, okay, maybe it's time to revisit Kindle. And so this thing that Kurt's doing, which is a free book club kind of thing has come off the back of that.

Because this is the thing. Once we go down a rabbit hole, we find lots of different avenues that we can try. And so that's just one of the things that we're testing out at the moment. Because what is what is very interesting and what I like about what you guys do and how you do it is you're not just selling or marketing products for Internet marketers. You actually deal with stuff from the real world. So I saw something a little while ago that you guys were talking about Sudoku also putting together Sudoku stuff. Talk to me about this. I mean, because from what I've seen before, you know, and everybody I've spoken to goes, you need to write a book. You need to become a published author. And I'm like, yeah, I don't know. And they reckon everybody's got a book in them. They don't say whether it's necessarily a good book or a bad book. But as a way to to to to shape what can you share? Like, I don't know if it's a hobby, do some research and write a book on it. There's no reason why not. I think the beautiful thing about publishing these days is that it has become accessible to everybody, especially through something like Kindle. Anyone can become a Kindle publisher. Amazon gives you the tools to do it for free.

You sign up with it's called the KDP program. You sign up free to join on Amazon. They give you the tools. They give you loads of training videos. So you don't have to spend a penny to learn how to get into this. Now, obviously, if you write one book or booklet or whatever, and you just stick it up on Amazon and hope for the best, you're probably not going to make very much money or it's not going to be an overnight success. But what people have realized or some people have realized is that there is a huge market in things called short reads and low content. Some people even say no content. I don't get such a thing, but low content books. And those are things like a short read could be 10 pages. And it would just be normally nonfiction. There are short reads that are in the fiction class, which are just short stories. And the thing is, I think when they say everyone's got a book in them, I think they do. But not everyone has got a full length novel in them. And that's the problem. People will sit down and think if I'm going to do a book, I've got to write X hundred pages. And so they never finish it. Yeah, the beauty of Kindle publishing is that you can just publish a short story. You can just publish a quick how to guide on something and you can get it out there and you've got an instant audience on Kindle.

But there are also other things which we'll talk about as we go on tonight, I'm sure. There are other ways that you can use Kindle to your advantage. It's not just about earning the royalties from the sale of books. My main interest is actually generating leads and subscribers from the people who download those Kindle books. Now, you've also done something and I'm going to go. This was done very suddenly and very quickly. You weren't you weren't well last week, so you weren't working. And when we say working, it's not like we would know here in South Africa, as in nine to five, slugging it at a job that you hate. Working is you're running your own business. But you took some time off despite taking time off. You did still work and you've redone your website. But I saw a comment that you made where you have done that website very, very quickly. Can we talk about that? Yeah, sure. Well, first of all, I already had a site. I just wasn't happy with it. So in other words, I had the content there. I just wasn't happy with the presentation. And the one thing I would say to anybody who's thinking about getting that website online, it's better to have something up, even if it's a bit ugly than it is to not have a website because a website will generate you some interest, some traffic, some customers, whatever.

You know, whereas not having a website is going to do absolutely nothing for you. Yeah. So I already had a fair amount of content and but I wasn't happy with the site. So I have been using a platform called bookmark for a little while now bookmark.com. It's they're not free. It is a paid service. And the way they work is they they use basically what is AI, artificial intelligence, to kind of build a website for you. And what happens is you go along, you tell it the type of site you want, the style you want, whatever, and it mocks something up right in front of your eyes. And it obviously won't be ready to go, but it will be a design layout. And you go, yeah, like that. Well, no, I don't if say no, it builds another one. And you can just keep hitting build until you get one you like. And then if you get one close, you can then fine tune it. And then you can add your content in and publish it and you're done. So because I already had my content, as soon as it had come up with a design I liked and I, I spent maybe half an hour tweaking it, it was just the time it took to copy and paste my existing content from my old website into this one. And I was done. And that's how I was able to do it so quickly. Is it newbie friendly?

Fairly. I would love I would love to say absolutely yes. But there it does have a learning curve. I mean, I think yes, it's newbie friendly. But we got to be careful in what people defined by newbie. A lot of people seem to think if something is called newbie friendly, it means that anyone could just turn it on and use it and know what they're doing. There is obviously a learning curve. And I would say there are one or two things that aren't quite as intuitive as they should be. But you will find, you know, so a couple of times I was like, how do you change that? I just can't find it. We'll have to go and look in the help or the FAQ and find out how to do it. Would you say, though, would you say, though, that it is easier now, for example, I kind of went about this the hard way and I first learned a little bit of WordPress and then I learned also from guys that are within Society11. It was recommended to me optimized press because of the kind of landing and websites I wanted to do and then something called oxygen. Now, those are not newbie friendly, but any stretch of the imagination that that is that is a very, very steep learning curve. Something like bookmark easier than that. Definitely easier than that. I think you have to remember with anything WordPress, you're starting on the back foot if you don't already know WordPress because you've got the learning curve of WordPress and then you're going to install optimized press or whatever, which are plugins and themes and things to make it do what you want to do.

So you almost doubling up the amount of learning you have to do. Bookmark is all in a single platform. You can manage absolutely everything from it. They've got and I'll tell you what I've given this their support is amazing. I had a one of the things I couldn't work out how to do. I just opened up the little support chat, which is there all the time and just typed a message and half an hour later, the guy was on and he was like, yeah, this is what you do and solved it. So very good support guys and that the platform bookmark is a platform. I don't know a lot about that business model, but I do know they've just they've got some new investment and that they're really growing this thing because when I first use bookmark, it was really not that good. It was, you know, it was its infancy and so I left it for quite a while and it was only when I revisited it a couple of months ago because I need to do a site quickly and I was like, wow, they have really fix this thing up. So, yeah, I really like bookmark and I know using it for about three or four sites. Brilliant stuff. Well, we'll come back and talk about that because these are the kind of tips and nuggets and wisdom that you get from within Society11 and it's it's so worthwhile.

I heard a little rumor the other day, though, that you guys are going to cut off membership. There's a membership cutoff point and when that is reached, that's it is closed and we're getting fairly close to that, aren't we? Yes, there's we put a cap on the membership of five hundred and eleven members. We love the number eleven, so we had to fit it in somewhere. Five hundred and eleven members is our membership cap. We're currently about three hundred. In fact, we're just over three hundred, but not ironically, not every member has joined the Facebook group, which is crazy because there's so much value in that group. But Society11 isn't just a Facebook group. It's it's a full members area with lots of tools and other things. So a big part of the reason is we are putting tools in there that are highly effective, but they are going to they're more highly effective because there aren't thousands and thousands of people using them. And we want to kind of keep it that way. So we've decided to follow what is really the is called the oversubscribed method. There's a book on Amazon. You can get called oversubscribed. I can't remember who is by very good read, completely revolutionized my thinking about the subscription model.

OK, he says making a note. OK, got it. Andy, when we come back, I'd like to tell you a little bit more about Amazon. You said you use it, the Kindle side of it for marketing. As you know, we hear me specifically, but South Africa, my listeners, we are interested in being able to do that little bit on the side, what they call the side hustle, you know, just just to top up our rather flagging income, et cetera, et cetera. So those are the kind of things that I love to talk about. When we come back, we'll chat to you some more about what you can do on Kindle. I've had a couple of messages coming in here. Everybody's going, oh, I'm aspiring to become a writer. I need more info. What can I do? How can I do? Where can I join? When we come back, we'll discuss all of that. My special guest on the line with me this evening, all the way from a rather rainy and wet United Kingdom. I must say I'm a bit glad you're getting some horrible weather because you've had some beautiful weather this past summer for you guys. We have. Yeah. So, you know, we're getting our own back here in Africa. We'll be back with Andy Brocklehurst. We talk in all things internet, internet marketing. My special guest, Andy Brocklehurst on the line with me.

You know, just when you think that your listeners don't pay attention, a couple of people, when I say a couple, I mean a couple have gone. That software that you said cancels out noises is brilliant. Andy is sounding brilliant on the radio. So there we go. Andy, quite an endorsement. Yeah, it is superb. I don't know how. It's just, well, I come from a techie background. So I used to program and things. I don't so much now. I've got a young lad that does that. But how they're achieving that with the technology is just phenomenal and amazing. So, yes. And I'm going to tell you something now. I'm going to be honest. This was something that was recommended in the group. It was on a website. It was on a special deal and I missed it. I have got the biggest sulk on that you've seen. I've been stomping around the house for the last few days because I missed it because it truly is a phenomenal piece of equipment. This is the kind of thing that you get within Society11. Now somebody else messaged me in here, Sue, and she says, is there only the one group? Because you guys are talking about different things. And I know that you've mentioned Society11 is a paid for group. Is there another group that we can join?

We do have something like that. I say we, you. Yes. First of all, there is a group called, there's a free group called Society11 Moneymakers and that is on Facebook. And if you search for that, you will find it and you can request to join. And that's completely free group that you don't get all the real gems in there, but you get a little sampling of what goes on and we do answer the odd question in there. If you're wanting to dip your toes in, though, that is the place to start. That's the place to start because you can and also a lot of our members that are actually in the main group do hang out in there as well. And I'm more than happy to answer questions. The beautiful thing about Society11 as a community is that Kurt and I don't have to sell it too hard because our members sell it for us. Yeah. So we tend to let people go in and talk to them and get honest feedback about what's going on in the main group and then they can decide if it's for them or not. What I like and I've got to tell you because we're going to be talking a little bit about this and some of the other groups that you have available is that you guys, because you've been in this business for so long, you're very well connected.

You get to test out a lot of products. You buy out of your own pocket. A lot of times you buy these products, you test them and then you will come back and you will say to the members, listen guys, if you're into this, this and this, this one, get it. And you'll also say avoid like the plague. I've made a couple of postings where I've seen a piece of shiny equipment and I've got, what do you think? What do you think? And you guys are going and you know what, I've never, never been led wrong yet. Thank you. I'm glad about that. We do have a policy with a lot of, we like to do completely onto reviews and I think that can get clouded if you get given review copies. Now don't be wrong. If somebody offers me a review copy for free, of course I'm going to say, yeah, I'll take a look, but I always tell them I'm going to be honest. I'm going to be, you know, but if it's for a review inside our members group, we nearly always buy it because then we are going in as a customer. We're seeing exactly what the customer sees. We're seeing any upsells and extra offers that they throw at you during the process. And we're able to talk about that. And then people get to see us go actually into the members area as a real member.

Because the other thing about review copies is that quite often they give you like the advanced version, but they don't tell you that's what they've given you. And then other people buy it and then you get the basic version and they've got to pay extra to upgrade and I don't like that. So we go in and we will pay out of our own pocket and I get a lot of messages going, why did you buy that? I'd have given it you. Because I needed to do an honest review and I needed people to see it. Plus if I bought it, I can say exactly what I think as a customer. Ah, the big difference. Okay, so we got Society 11, the main group. We've got Society 11 Moneymakers, which is the free group. And then the one you were talking about Kindle now and Kindle publishing in the short reach. Tell me a bit more about that and why you use it. Okay, well, as far as we don't yet have a group specifically about Kindle publishing, Kurt has set up a group about getting free books called Free Books and Book Reviews it's called. And that's again, that's another Facebook group. And in there, all he's doing is posting up books that you can get on your Kindle device completely for free. And when at the moment, it's not even that it's not just marketing, it's literally about any book because we're making it like a more general group to see how it goes.

So there is that group if you want to want a good source of good free books, then then buy me to check them out. And another group I'll give a quick mention to that's free to join is a group by run called cyber hustles, which is specifically for people that are looking for that little sideline thing. And the idea of it is to, to talk about side hustles that can be scaled so that they can potentially become a full time thing. Because the problem with a lot of side hustles is that's all they'll ever be. And so you invested this time into them, but you can't really grow them any further. The beauty of what we talk about in cyber hustles is the fact that you can start them as a side thing. If that's all you ever want out of it, that's absolutely fine. But if you wanted to take it further, they are completely scalable business ideas. Which is great because there's a couple of people that I've been talking to since we've started talking to you and they're going, David, it's fantastic what you guys talk about, but I don't want to go online full time. I've got a job. I'm happy at my job. I want to do something on the side and cyber hustles is perfect. It's a perfect place for you to hang out.

Absolutely free as well. Still free. Absolutely free. Always will be that group will always be free. So yes, again, just send a request. And if you when you join, if you come and join it, let us know that you heard about it from listening to us on the radio because that'd be good tonight. Yeah, I'd like to know that as well. Just go. You know, I heard that weirdo David talking about you on mix FM and there we go. So we are chatting to my special guest, Andy brocklehurst, your website, Andy brocklehurst.com. Is it Andy and do I or Andy? I.E. Which one are we going with? It doesn't matter either. That's the beauty of it. I've got both domains. In fact, I've also got a NDI without the E just in case. So any version of Andy followed by the word brocklehurst, which is B.R.O.C.K. L-E-H-U-R-S-T dot com. We'll get you there. Brilliant little website. I love what Andy's done. And by the way, I had a look at the website, which is why I brought up bookmark. OK, because it's a very, very nice looking website and definitely an improvement of the old one. The old one was a bit tired. This one looks brilliant. I love the graphics. I love the way it's been put together. And for me, having a chat to you tonight, the fascinating part is that it's done with a lot of A.I.

I like that. Yes. I'm not a designer. I'm rubbish at design. And I used to spend a fortune going to people and going to make this graphic for me. Can you make that? But with that, all of the designs I was taking care of, I just had to keep clicking a button until I liked what I saw and then went, yes, please. And that was it. Yeah. And then just put your put your information in. So something like that would be great for people who are doing, you know, like a hobby site or they want to start a blog or something like that. I mean, that's what you use. That's what you use yours for. Yes, it's got it's got basic pages. It's also got a blog feature. There's an optional e-commerce update if you wanted to run a store from it. Although you could obviously link in any third party store system if you wanted to. But they do have one that integrates with it. So if you want a quick way of getting a store online and they have that as well. Is this something that somebody could could get hold of you and say, Andy, can you hook me up with a special discount or you're not affiliated with them? OK, I'm not currently an affiliate, but I have contacted them because now they fixed all the issues that used to have when it very first started.

I really think it's a fantastic product. And so I'm talking to the guys that are behind it at the moment, which is kind of how I know that they've just got a lot of investment and other stuff. And I do plan to do a promo on it and I am trying to strike up some kind of deal with them. So if but if you're in one of my groups, if you're in cyber hustles or Society 11 or you're on my email list, as soon as I've gotten use of that, that will be out there. I got to tell you, if you're listening tonight and you're wanting to build a website, you don't have a lot of experience. You need to have some basic knowledge. OK, you can't go in there and not know anything. You need to be prepared to do a bit of learning. I'm fairly confident you can get that learning under your belt in about a weekend. It's a brilliant piece of software. When I was very much like you, I saw it. I think it was probably the first time that it came around on special offer. I got myself one and I was like, OK, but it's still very clunky, you know, just didn't seem to everything didn't really tell. I put up a little website, you know, build it. Nobody came, didn't really care and left it until you started talking about it again.

And when I saw your site, I had another look at it. Definitely, definitely the way to go. Yes, yes, I'm totally sold on it now. And it's I'm also hugely relieved to not be dependent on WordPress anymore. As great as WordPress is for its flexibility, it is. It has its own issues, the biggest one being security. It is because WordPress is the most used blogging platform, it's also the most hacked. And, you know, there are there are hackers and bot systems. If you put up a fresh website with WordPress within 10 minutes, you're getting attacked by bots. That's how crazy it is. I mean, right now with what I've got to do, and this has also been a learning process and asking guys like you a lot of questions, I do all the plugins before I even start anything about the site. And then 90 percent of the plugins I do is security. Right. Because my one site, I mean, I don't know, they discovered me and they discovered some email addresses and I was getting the most interesting emails, the most interesting. Yes, I have I have one lotteries in the States about five or six times. I've had a long lost relative from Brunei that contacted me and wanted me to do something with one hundred and forty five million dollars was insane.

And then a lot of people who'd obviously been spying on me, I blame Facebook for that. And we're offering me, you know, certain notions and patience. So, yeah, that happens. You will find that that happens a lot less with bookmark. OK, so we're going to do that. We're going to follow you when we wrap up tonight. I'll give away. I'll give out all of those those details and those bits and pieces again. I would like to find out, though, when we come back a little bit more about why you specifically are using Amazon now. And then also somebody mentioned to me a little while ago is like selling on Amazon itself. So, you know, there's that there's it's there's all of these little things where you can make some money. So let's chat a bit about some of those. We'll do that when we come back. It is makes ninety three point eight some legendary radio for you on a Monday night. And we've got dinner. You're flying solo tonight. You're flying solo again. OK, it's the musical time machine. Am I correct? Do I get points for remembering or what? Dean sitting here. Let me turn you on. Then you can say hello quickly. There you go. Some musical time machine tonight. I've got it right. It's taken me what, six months, something like six months to remember.

So that's really good. What do we got to look forward to tonight in your show? Well, we're back to the year of nineteen seventy five. So we're looking forward to playing some green Campbell and a whole lot of rock and roll and bit of disco and all sorts of rock and roll and disco. Then Campbell. Yeah. Yeah. In my mind, there's only one clean camera. You probably got that one right around. That's the one. Oh, that used to be my dad's. I've had one brandy too many. So that used to be his song. So there we go. We're going to be looking forward to that. Dean flying solo once again tonight, he's going to be up in about 20 minutes time. We'll be back in just a bit with Andy Brokalis. My special guest that we're turning to, it's been way too long, but we had the whole studio problem is internet marketing guru, Andy Brokalis. And we're talking we're talking Kindle, Kindle publishing, Kindle short reads. And just before we went to the break, Andy, I asked you, you know, you've said that you've been researching it. And I love the way you should have described this, going down the rabbit hole and playing and experimenting because that's what it should be. It should be fun. Not done with this era of desperation. But why are you into Kindle now?

OK, well, basically because I'm always looking for other avenues and things, you know, I'm a serial entrepreneur is kind of what I do. But I do have fun with it. And we were just looking at the fact that Amazon now has obviously a huge amount of traffic all the time. People search for various things on Amazon beyond just searching for products now. So there are people that will go to Amazon and they will type in things like, you know, how how can I do this or how can I do that? And so if you're the one that's got a Kindle book on the topic and if that Kindle book is cheap or free because you can do free books, then there's a good chance that someone's going to download it and have a look. And that book is an ideal opportunity to introduce yourself, teach them a little something and then refer them back to other websites or sign up forms or products that you have. So my main interest is always because it is always grown my own audience and it's another way of outreaching to people. So somebody made it may find a book on there, download it. They go, yeah, I like this content. And I normally put a little section in the book that said that offers them a bonus. So it will be something like I've also made a video on how to do this and you can get the video for free at this website.

When they go to that website, they have to put their email address in in order to see the video that puts them onto my email list. So now I can follow up with those people and build rapport and kind of make them get to know me a bit better. So most of this, the reason that you're doing this is yet another string in your marketing bow, as it were, because when you have an online business, and I learned this the very, very, very, very hard way, that it's not a case of build it and they will come. You have to give people something of real value. Yes. Now, this is a challenge because one of the things, as soon as you start investigating online businesses on the interwebs, is you get smashed with all sorts of crap and everybody tries to market everything to you. And what I found, and I spent a lot of money until I learned differently, is what we've discussed this before, private label rights. People sell you this, what they call PLR, and it's absolute sorry. Maybe I'm not allowed to say this on radio, but I'm going to say it, it's crap. It's absolute crap. And it's so, so difficult to find out. Now, the joy of knowing you and being involved in the group, etc., etc., is you've got guys who write PLR for a living, so you know it's good stuff.

Right. Yeah. This is the thing. Any business, any industry, any sector has its good guys and its bad guys. Internet marketing has more than its fair share of bad because there are a lot of people who have realized that, you know, when people come into this, a lot of people are looking for, I need a few extra, you know, a little bit extra cash to pay the bills. I need a little bit of extra cash to do this, and it'd be good if I could find a way. And they prey on those people because they will say, well, here's the easiest push-button magic way of doing it. And that, as we know, is nonsense. So, but there are, and PLRs are different, there are good PLR writers and there are bad PLR writers. But if you can find the good stuff and you know how to use it, then you can absolutely make some really decent money out of it. But if you end up buying the rubbish, you're going to be left with something that's not really going to help you at all. And yet we go back to what you said earlier, and that's always stuck with me is if you want to start a business on the Internet, there's a couple of things you need. You need to have an Internet service provider. You need to get a website, you know, maybe get it built for you. You can outsource it.

There's people out there that do it for you. And then you need to have something to talk about. And this can be, I don't know, maybe you like making ships in bottles. But really, there's an endless ability. You've got to find something that actually interests you. And for me, it's been this process of looking for what would I do for free, you know, what I just enjoy doing and researching. And, you know, once I found something like that, I go, well, do you think people would like it? And how do you feel about this? Because and I'll be honest with you now, you know, this I created a website which I thought was going to be the be all and end all. I was going to rake in the money. It was a brilliant, it's a brilliant concept. It's brilliant documentation, brilliant training course called How to Sell Motor Vehicles. And I put it out there. I sat back and I did some marketing and some paid advertising. Do you know how many people bought from me? How many? Not one. So you know what I did? I went out to the local market and I went, listen, I got this program. But I'm going to do something which maybe I should have done in the beginning and you're going to say you should have. I asked them what they wanted and they said to me, well, the first problem is we already sell motor vehicles.

So you don't need to tell me how to sell them. I'm like, no, but it's more than that. And they said, well, why didn't you say so? Ask ask people what they want. Absolutely. One of the big things when you're when you get into product creating is you do your research and you think, great, I've got a brilliant idea. And you start putting it together. And then a thing that we call feature creep happens, which is where you start thinking, I need to put this in and this in and this in. And eventually it grows into this monster of a product that covers everything way more than it should do and also becomes very difficult to convince people to buy. Because when you have a product that solves one problem, it's very easy to spell out on a sales page. This is a problem. This is a solution. Here's a buy button. If you do that with a product that potentially sells 20 problems and you tell them up front, hey, this is going to solve 20 problems, they might only be interested in one of those. But the fact you've told them it sells 20, you now have to convince them that it delivers on every one of the 20. And so you're making the sales process harder for yourself. So you've got to be a bit of a salesperson. And the best way to get any of this kind of stuff done is by finding something you're passionate about and something that you love talking about, something that you could really get into.

And it could be, like I said, anything from stamp collecting to building ships in bottles, collecting vinyl records. I'm looking across at Dean, our next presenter. I know he's got quite a collection of vinyl records. But I mean, you know, these are the things that you can do. Yeah. As long as you know that there are other people that are genuinely interested in it. Obviously, if you've got a really bizarre hobby that there's only, you know, a dozen of the people in the world that are going to possibly be interested in it, then that's going to be a difficult sell. So you need to find something. The reason that you need to have a passion for it is because you are going to have to write blog posts. You're going to have to write social media posts. You're going to have to create a product. You're going to have to do advertising. If you aren't passionate about it, you are going to burn yourself out before you get all of those things done. So that's why you need the passion. But it also is critical that you know there's a market for it. And that is research that you can do research online. It's very easy to Google Trends will tell you how many people are searching for those sorts of things.

Google Trends. So we need to look at something called Google Trends. Google Trends is a thing that's out there that's free that you can go to and put in keywords and it will tell you how many searches those keywords are getting every month. And if you put in a keyword and only 10 people a month are looking for it, then you're not going to get much traffic. If you've come up with a keyword or phrase and it's getting thousands of people, now, yes, it's going to be more competitive. But that's because there's a lot more people interested in that. Well, there goes my idea of shopping cart racing. Yeah, possibly. No, no, no. Just speaking to you. I know that that idea is out the door. Andy, we've mentioned a lot tonight. Andy Brocklehurst, B-R-O-C-K-L-E-H-U-R-S-T. AndyBrocklehurst.com is where to go to check out Andy's website. I'm going to give you a little a little sneaky heads up here and do it before he changes his mind. He's got some really cool free stuff there. OK, we're big fans. We've just increased the amount of free stuff and there's more going in there soon. So, yes. Yeah, like it a lot. Like it a lot. Join his mailing list. It's always interesting. Sometimes there might be a little bit of colorful language if that offends you, tough tacky.

We really don't mind because that's what it's for. It's a group for adults, open-minded people. Andy calls it like it is. So does Kurt very often. And it's well worth it. So, AndyBrocklehurst.com. Society11. So, the word society, the number 11, that is the paid for group. I would highly recommend joining that. If you want to dip your toes in the water, go to Society11 Moneymakers. It's another Facebook group. What else do we discover? Oh, Kindle. Where do we find out more about the Kindle stuff? That's Kurt's group and that's... They have a free group called something... I'm going to look it up again now. It's called Free Books and Book Reviews. It's called. And it's basically a group where they're posting books that are available for free on the Kindle platform. So, that's worth checking out. Sonic the Hustles is my other free group on Facebook. You might want to check it out. You're looking for Sonic Hustles and things like that. And as for the Kindle publishing stuff, if it's something that interests you, go and join. Go to Amazon's. It's called Amazon KDP. It's free to join and they give you all the tools. There's loads of training in there. Yes, it's a learning curve. Yes, it's going to be a bit of time and effort spent working at how those tools and things go together.

But none of them are difficult. You know, I was able to get my books out on Kindle very easily just following their step by step instructions. You don't need to go and buy high price courses of other people. It's all there. So you go on to Amazon and it's Amazon. I'm just going to... I think if you type into your web browser, instead of www, if you type the letters KDP and then Amazon.com or CoUK or whatever, then it will take you to the Amazon KDP Direct Publishing Program and you can sign in with your regular Amazon login and then become part of that. Wonderful stuff. If you've missed any of this, if you need anything, I'll give you my email address in just a bit. And I can put you in touch with Andy and all of these guys. Please, if you do join up or chat to Andy or Kurt or join one of the groups, just tell them that you heard it on Mix David sent you. That way, you know, Andy will keep talking to me and he won't fire me and say I've only got three listeners. Alrighty. Andy Brocklehurst, our internet guru, marketing guru from the UK. I'm going to let you get home and have your tea or get out of the office and go and have your tea and out of the rain. Thanks for chatting to us. We hope to do it again soon.

Yeah, it's been great. At this time, we're always flying by so quickly. They always do. Yes, indeed. Andy, thank you so much. Have yourself a great evening. We will chat again very soon. You too. Bye. Bye. There we go. Andy Brocklehurst, internet marketing expert on the line with us. And got to tell you, it's always a pleasure talking to him. He's such a nice guy. Always ready to help Society11. A couple of people have asked me about podcasts, where to do it, how to do it, why to do it. I generally try and put podcasts up within two to three days of the actual live interview. And those podcasts, as well as everything we've done prior to this, are available at What's Involved. So it's W-A-T-T-S-I-N-V-O-L-V-E-D, what'sinvolved.co.za. If you'd like to get hold of me, it's quite easy. It's just David@what'sinvolved.co.za. Otherwise, say, how's it on LinkedIn? David Watts, you can find me there. You can find me on Facebook. Love to hear from you. If you've got anybody you'd like me to chat to, there's somebody that fascinates you. A subject that fascinates you. Let me know. I'm thinking of bringing a shaman in. Somebody said, "Bring in a shaman." I want to do that. I also want to talk to somebody about cannabis, CBDs.

What is this big thing? There's a big hoo-ha now. They discovered it 20, 30 years ago called the endocannabinoidal system that runs in the human body. And apparently, it means great things for healing. People in Silicon Valley are now taking psilocybin mushrooms, magic mushrooms. They are microdosing with that, and they're using it to treat PTSD. These are things people have asked for. If you've got anything, please let me know. I'd love to know what you guys want to hear. It's your show as well. And we'll see if we can get the guests on. Right. I'm up and out of here. It's been absolutely fantastic. The Music Time Machine with Dean up next. I'm looking forward to it. I get to listen to it for about 10 minutes on the way home. So always a pleasure. I'll catch you again next Monday between 6 and 8.
